What Happens During Treatment

A general anaesthetic places patients in a controlled state of unconsciousness, so they are not aware of the treatment while it happens. Most patients do not remember the procedure afterwards. The anaesthetist monitors your breathing, heart rate, and other vital signs throughout. After treatment, patients wake in a recovery area, where staff continue to check on them before going home. 

Like any general anaesthetic, it carries some risks. The anaesthetist will discuss these with you before treatment. Our team will also give you instructions about fasting, transport and recovery before your appointment.

Longer or More Complex Treatment

General anaesthetic may also be an option if you need longer or more complex treatment, such as the removal of several teeth or wisdom teeth. If you have a medical or physical condition, we will assess whether general anaesthetic is suitable for you before planning treatment.

Is General Anaesthetic Right for You?

• Dental fees: Ava Dental does not generally charge extra for dental treatment carried out under general anaesthetic. Your dental fees are the same as they would be for the same treatment while awake.
• Hospital and anaesthetist fees: If you have private hospital insurance, your policy may cover part or all of these fees. You may need to pay an excess and any gap, depending on your policy. If you don't have hospital cover, you'll pay these fees yourself.

Before treatment, we will give you an estimate so you know what to expect. We also suggest checking with your health fund about your level of cover and any waiting periods that may apply.
